WHO IS MARC COMICS?
What began as a childhood fascination for Marc Jackson, has now become a source of enjoyment, not just for him, but others too! “Comics have been part of my life since I was little. I’ve read comics, made comics…”
His passion evolved into published work, hands-on comic art workshops, and eventually ‘Room for Comics‘, a vibrant comic store and studio dedicated to developing creativity and connection.
The studio runs sessions where children and parents can explore their creativity and build skills within a hub that encourages comic lovers of all ages. Room for Comics has become a space in Macclesfield which is built around shared passion and accessibility, where art feels approachable rather than intimidating.
LESSONS IN BUILDING COMMUNITY
Marc’s journey teaches us how community and connection can help a creative business thrive. By building an engaged online presence, beyond sharing his own skills and comic books, he has been able to put together interactive workshops which inspire young artists and help them to elevate their creative skills.
1. Visibility through social media
Building a community always begins with visibility. When asked how people discover Marc’s Comics today, the answer is immediate:
“Social media is a huge part of what we do.”
In the past, promoting workshops meant printed posters in libraries and local spaces. While effective at the time, digital marketing and building an online network has completely transformed Marc’s reach and engagement.
“We’re in that world. You can’t not be online.”
This consistent presence helps:
- Keep the brand top of mind
- Strengthen connection with the local community
- Showcase creativity in action
Which bring us to step 2…
2. Visual Storytelling
One of the biggest shifts for Marc’s Comics has been how workshops are captured and shared.
Previously, Marc rarely posted photos. Now, in collaboration with his wife, Jane, they are able capture real-time video content which plays a central role in their digital presence.
Marc describes: “Now Jane captures the workshops through video while they’re happening. Parents can see what it would be like if their son or daughter came along.”
From illustrated panels to behind-the-scenes moments in his workshops, Marc’s Comics has a constant stream of engaging, visual content that performs well across social media.
This kind of visual storytelling:
- Builds trust with parents
- Shows real experiences
- Helps families picture themselves in the space
3. A community that loves to return
Workshops are at the heart of Room for Comics, and they play a major role in building long-term relationships. From families, to people young and old looking to develop on a hobby, there is a real sense of community and support in each of Marc’s workshops.
“We’re building a community of parents and children who love to come here and draw and create.”
They aren’t just about teaching art techniques, the workshops are about:
- Providing a safe, encouraging environment
- Letting imagination lead
- Making creativity fun and social
The workshops are about more than simply doing an activity, they’re about connection and collaboration, all while allowing artistic visions to flourish. Many children return again and again, which speaks volumes about the experience and atmosphere Marc has created.
4. Community Leads Opportunity
The creative community Marc has built through his artwork has opened unexpected doors.
After Marc self-published a comic, a local article caught the attention of someone with a surprising connection to the industry – a former illustrator of Henry’s Cat, now living in Macclesfield.
Their message stayed with Marc: “You need to put Macclesfield on the map for comics.”
Since then, Marc, alongside setting up expressive art workshops, also runs a comic art festival, MACC-POW, in Macclesfield’s town hall. The festival has been running for 11 consecutive years and has proved to be a huge success. People can apply to have their work showcased at the festival, giving a platform and opportunities to a range of new artists.
This community arts project has allowed the art community in Macclesfield to come together, and the positive feedback the event gets every year shows just how loved the event is, by artists and visitors alike.
Community created opportunity for Marc, and now he leverages that for new artists to bring them the same opportunities.

Marc has taken his skill and not just sold his art, but created a space where he can teach people new skills, built a space where artists can connect. His community allows people in the art industry to discover new talent, offering growth to others around him.
He has provided value beyond his own art.
